Event Description
The Mediterranean region holds unique geographical, historical, cultural, and environmental characteristics, which make it a crucial crossroad for commercial, social, and energy exchanges across three continents. At the same time, the Mediterranean constitutes a hotspot of interconnected climate risks, instabilities, and geopolitical tensions. The Mediterranean Dialogue on Sustainable Energy and Climate (MEDSEC) – the first Mediterranean-led platform dedicated to multistakeholder cooperation and climate diplomacy for a just regional energy transition – builds on a vision of long-term stability, security, sustainability, and shared prosperity for all in the region through renewable energy.
The event will delve into the opportunities of tapping into the area’s vast renewable energy potential for a more ambitious, just, and accelerated energy transition to boost energy security and climate resilience, revitalise economies, and stimulate sustainable local supply chains. The MEDSEC promotes a one-terawatt (1 TW) target of renewable energy capacity installed in the Mediterranean by 2030. With the participation of renewables industry leaders and government representatives, the session will frame such target as a first regional transposition of the global goal to triple renewables agreed at COP 28. The event seeks to spark momentum for developing a Mediterranean-integrated clean energy framework, ramping up collective ambition for a regional target of 1 TW renewable energy by 2030.
