MEDSEC at IRENA General Assembly: The Dialogue on the Mediterranean Sustainable Transition Reaches Abu Dhabi
The Mediterranean Dialogue on Sustainable Energy and Climate (MEDSEC) participated in the 15th IRENA General Assembly. The initiative, coordinated by Greening the Islands with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) was represented in the preliminary session “Energy Transition Across the MED” on January 11, 2025.
Gianni Chianetta, Chair of MEDSEC, presented the call to action launched by MEDSEC to support the TeraMED initiative toward a target of 1TW renewable energy capacity by 2030 in the Mediterranean region.
He emphasised the region’s potential to be a global model for the energy transition through such bold goal, while contributing to secure the tripling renewable capacity by 2030 and net-zero by 2050 targets.
“As GTI Foundation, we are proud to be among the promoters of the MEDSEC, a vital climate dialogue originating in the Mediterranean, where islands represent crucial laboratories for innovative solutions,” said Chianetta.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, on January 11, the Italian Embassy in the UAE hosted a networking event, co-organized with IRENA and MEDSEC, to promote dialogue and cooperation on climate and energy in the MED and MENA regions. MEDSEC’s open letter was shared with representatives from Governments and leading industry, research, and civil society organizations.
With the region already exceeding the 1.5°C threshold, urgent collaboration extending to neighbouring areas is essential to tackle the pressing climate and energy security challenges, leveraging cultural affinities, creativity and planning skills.
MEDSEC is grateful to the Italian Government and the Italian UAE Embassy for supporting and hosting the event. Special thanks go to Ambassador Lorenzo Fanara, Hon. Vice Minister Vannia Gava, IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera, and Global Renewables Alliance Steering Committee for enriching the event with their vision and leadership to advance this crucial mission.
