“We were pleased to join such remarkable panel and glad to see consensus building up for 1 TW RES by 2030 in the region,” said Gianni Chianetta, Chair of MEDSEC, “the TeraMED initiative represents a bold regional response to the global energy targets. We thank all the supporters of the call to action and invite more to join.”

MEDSEC and the TeraMED call to action were also featured in a side event co-organised by Greening the Islands Foundation, the Greek Ministry of Environment Energy and Climate Change (YPEKA) and the European Public Law Organization (EPLO), at the Greek Pavilion on November 16.

The event “100% RES Islands in the Mediterranean: championing climate diplomacy towards 1 TW RES by 2030, focused on the role of islands – positioned as cultural and energy exchange hubs, as well as laboratories for technological and digital innovation, new financial models, community engagement, social acceptance, biodiversity, and nexus – in driving higher ambition in the Mediterranean towards 1TW RES capacity by 2030.

With the participation of the Greek and Italian governments, the session also stressed the role of international cooperation for accelerated, just energy transition in the Mediterranean, along with the specific asks advanced by the call to action to Mediterranean Governments to reach the 1TW common goal, endorsed among others by IRENA, Global Renewables Alliance, and Union for the Mediterranean.

The event was enriched with the participation of esteemed speakers and guests: George Kremlis – Director Circular Economy and Climate Institute, European Public Law Organisation; Dimitris Kollias – Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Greece; Francesco Corvaro – Special Envoy for Climate Change, Italy; Jauad El Kharraz – Co-Chair Teramed Initiative; Grammenos Mastrojeni – Senior Deputy Secretary General, Union for the Mediterranean.

MEDSEC was also invited to participate in the side event “Towards a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition in the Islamic World”, organised by ICESCO (Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) on 15 November.

MEDSEC highlighted the key priorities outlined in the TeraMED call to action, which were developed in collaboration with leading partners and numerous regional and global stakeholders to collectively advocate for urgent action to accelerate the energy transition in the Mediterranean region towards 1 TW renewable capacity by 2030.

These discussions underscored the immense opportunities for strengthened cooperation among Mediterranean nations to advance energy security, diversify economies, create jobs, and build sustainable value chains—ensuring a just and equitable energy transition for all.
