The first Mediterranean-led platform dedicated to multistakeholder cooperation and climate diplomacy for sustainable development through renewable energy in the region. Working with all MED countries to promote a regional approach to a just energy transition and contributing to the global target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The Mediterranean Region Context
- The MED is of high importance for the world, with exceptional levels of biodiversity and unique socio-cultural features originating from three continents. For millennia it has been a crossroads of civilizations, and cultural and commercial exchanges. Today, it still represents a key basin for people and goods to pass through, but the region is also marked by economic, social, and political instability, aggravating inequalities, and a grievous migratory crisis.
- A complex security environment is compounded by a worsening climate change outlook, placing millions of lives at threat: according to the IPCC, the region is warming faster than the global average and its surface temperature has already reached the target threshold of 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level. The oil & gas industry still exerts great weigh on bilateral relations and international cooperation in the area.
- Drawing on huge renewable energy potential, an accelerated and inclusive energy transition of the MED appears as a key catalyst for its future security, stability, and socio-economic development. However, despite the MED countries sharing their history and facing common risks, a shared vision for developing a resilient, sustainable, and peaceful region is currently lacking. There is no formal representation for the Mediterranean in the international climate diplomacy space and lack of a multistakeholder platform to host dialogue.
